Le Vast: a village of superlatives

300 inhabitants, a château with a waterfall and a bakery said to make the best brioche in the world.

The waterfall at Le Vast with its well-known bridge

Le Vast lies in the Val de Saire and has around 300 inhabitants. The little village is very picturesque and has a good deal to offer.

Château de la Germonière

Originally founded as a spinning mill in 1803, the building was later demolished and rebuilt in its present form as a residence in 1892. The garden was redesigned several times and the waterfalls of the three former mills were combined. The result is today’s château with the famous bridge in front of the falls – the most photographed subject in the area.

A place to picnic

Opposite the waterfall there is a cow pasture. Follow the fence towards the stream and you come to a pretty spot that invites you to picnic in summer.

And the brioche

Not to be forgotten: the very best brioche of all – or so the rumour goes. La Brioche du Vast is known well beyond the region and worth a detour.
