La Benoîterie, a 16th-century former cooperage, seen from the garden
Saint-Jores, Manche

La Benoîterie

A 16th-century cooperage, carefully restored: natural stone, old beams, two fireplaces, plus a garden with a pond, a ruin and an ancient oak.

  • 4-star Meublé de Tourisme
  • 130 m², 4 guests
  • 2,000 m², fenced
  • Two fireplaces

An old cooperage, thoughtfully brought back to life

La Benoîterie sits in a small and very quiet hamlet near Saint-Jores. Barrels were once made here. The restoration used almost exclusively natural materials so that the historic fabric would survive.

The result is 130 m² that feel both old and comfortable: roughly rendered walls, exposed rubble stonework, sturdy ceiling beams and a herringbone parquet floor that is pleasant underfoot.

La Benoîterie is a non-smoking house as well.

Living room and fireplace room

The living room opens across two levels right up into the roof. A leather sofa, an armchair with footstool, a wood-burning stove and a large smart TV with two streaming services included.

Next to it lies the real fireplace room: two wing chairs in front of an open fire, a sideboard and a large mirror. In winter it is the most popular room in the house.

  • Two fireplaces, firewood included
  • Smart TV with two streaming services
  • Herringbone parquet and stone walls
  • Dog beds in the living area

Double bed in the large upstairs bedroom

Two bedrooms, two bathrooms

The ground-floor bedroom has a double bed, a bench and direct access to the garden – handy for the last walk of the day with the dogs. The shower room beside it has striking tiles and an illuminated mirror.

The upstairs bedroom is the finest room in the house: a double bed beneath the open roof structure, a few steps up a reading corner and an en-suite bathroom with a stone basin.

  • 2 double beds
  • 2 bathrooms, one en suite
  • Reading corner in the upstairs bedroom
  • Garden access from the ground floor
The large fenced garden at La Benoîterie

2,000 m² of garden with pond, ruin and ancient oak

The plot is fenced all round – 1.40 to 1.60 m high, with dense hedges in addition. An ancient oak stands in the middle and many other trees give shade.

A small fenced pond draws yellow flag irises and dragonflies in May. Beside it lies a 13th-century ruin; from there you can watch the sun set over the Cotentin in the evening.

In spring the magnolia and wild orchids flower – the garden changes with every season.

  • Fenced, 1.40 to 1.60 m, plus hedges
  • Fenced pond
  • 13th-century ruin
  • Terrace, barbecue, garden furniture

Where you are

The house lies in a hamlet near Saint-Jores in the commune of Montsenelle, a good ten minutes’ drive south of Picauville. The surroundings are bocage: hedgerows, narrow lanes, pasture.
