A barn that became a home for a while

Originally there was nothing on the plot but an old, dilapidated barn. With a great deal of patience the previous owners turned it into a house where old and new belong together: ancient oak beams above modern bathrooms, thick stone walls beside floor-to-ceiling windows.

At its heart is the living room with its open gallery. From there large windows look into the garden and on across the marais. Next door is the kitchen with its dining area; the adjoining conservatory is where most guests drink their first coffee.

Maison les Grues is a non-smoking house.

Living room with gallery

Leather sofas, a wood-burning stove and a smart TV with a Sonos system. The stairs lead up to the gallery with its wing chair, reading lamp and a small book swap – the quietest spot in the house.

Large dog beds are provided, along with blankets for the sofa and armchair. You need bring nothing but the things your dogs are attached to.

Spacious kitchen with island and a view into the garden

Kitchen, dining area and conservatory

The kitchen is generously laid out, with an island, a gas hob and everything you need for cooking. The large wooden table in the dining area comfortably seats six.

The conservatory with its two leather sofas is the real living room in summer: from here you look into the garden and across the meadows to the marais.

Two bedrooms, two bathrooms

On the ground floor there is a bedroom with a box-spring bed against a natural stone wall, with a view of and access to the garden. Its bathroom has a walk-in shower, underfloor heating and a heated towel rail.

The second bedroom is upstairs beneath old beams, with its own bathroom right next door. Both rooms have a double bed.

4,500 m² of garden and 1.80 metres of fence all round

The garden is why many guests come back. It is completely enclosed, 1.80 m high, without gaps. Your dogs can run while you have breakfast in peace.

Between fruit trees and beds there are loungers and a seating area in the sheltered courtyard. In spring the apple trees blossom; in winter the water of the marais reaches almost to the boundary – and the migrating birds come almost up to the fence.

There is a covered carport for two vehicles.

The barrel sauna

The wooden barrel sauna stands free in the garden, facing west. After a day in the coastal wind it is exactly the right thing – and in winter you sit inside while the marshes stand under water and the sky turns red.

Firewood for the sauna is included in the rent.

Dog shower, dryer and seven dog beds

After the beach dogs are wet, sandy and happy. So that this does not end in the bathroom, Maison les Grues has a stainless-steel dog shower with a ramp, along with clippers and a dog dryer.

Inside there are seven dog beds, bowls and waste bags. There is no limit on the number of dogs and no surcharge – simply tell us how many are coming when you enquire.

Where you are

The house lies at the hamlet of La Vienville near Picauville, in the middle of the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin nature park. Sainte-Mère-Église is ten minutes away, Utah Beach about 25.

Shops, a bakery and a weekly market can be found within 5 to 15 kilometres.
